Review: Rega Planar 1 Plus & Audioengine A5+ Speaker System

With all the options out there, finding the perfect pairing of a turntable and speakers can be daunting. Thankfully, some pairings are just meant to be, like the Rega Planar 1 Plus turntable and Audioengine A5+ Speaker System. This combination was created and tested in collaboration with Jerry Raskin’s Needle Doctor. Spoiler alert, it’s impressive. At under $1,000, this combo is ideal for the new or intermediate vinyl enthusiast looking for a quality setup at a value.

Setup

Both the Audioengine A5+ speakers and Rega Planar 1 Plus turntable are fully plug-and-play. Setup on this combination could not be easier. Simply plug them into a trusted power strip, link them to each other via the included quality wiring, and you’re golden.

The speakers and turntable both feature their own on-off switch. The speakers can even be left on in standby mode, getting rid of the need to reach back and flip the switch daily. The turntable begins and ends spinning via the on-off switch, which is conveniently located underneath it to the front left.

Sound

The bass on this speaker and turntable combination impresses. The bass groove of TLC’s “No Scrubs” sounded clear and defined over the capably loud speakers. A deep bass passage during Ginuwine’s “Pony” was handled excellently by the Rega Carbon cartridge and stylus. Instrumental EDM music sounded like a mini club experience at home.

Treble was immaculate on Destiny Child’s Survivor album. The beautiful tweeters on the speakers are more than ornamental, able to accurately reproduce details not usually heard at this price point. Higher-pitched elements of Rihanna & Calvin Harris’ track “We Found Love” sounded sharp and crisp.

Dynamic pop shined, sounding punchy yet detailed; Christina Aguilera’s self-titled debut album was a highlight in testing. Vocals sound thick, like they’re at the front and center. This was perfect for rap music like the City Girls hit “Act Up.” The stereo separation provided by the stylus and speakers is nice, creating an enjoyable, expansive soundscape.

Design

The gloss white options of the speakers and turntable match well. Sleek and elegant, they gently reflect any light in the room. This photo-worthy design is perfect for the growing community of Reddit and Instagram users who share media of their records playing.
